Here is the reply that Russ Owens received Nov. 7 from the big chief on the 72 regarding our donation to the ship fund in the name of Bill Sumner. Russ says

"notice the CMDCM rate is now just MCPO. (grrrr). New non rates."

Address to send the donation is in the reply.

 Gentlemen,

I appreciate you reaching out to us and we are excited to
re-establish communications with the USS MAHAN Association. I am sorry to
hear of Mr. Sumner's passing. We are grateful for the opportunity to accept
a gift in his memory. Please make the check out to "USS MAHAN DDG-72 MWR
Fund" and we will be sure to put it to good use.

As you mentioned in a previous email we are in fact getting ready to
deploy and will not be able to support a visit prior to our departure. We
should be back mid to late summer next year and would love to set up a visit
then. I will let you know as the time comes closer and if you do not here
back from us please feel free to reach out at any time.

Thank you for your continued service and for ensuring the legacy of
the MAHAN name is not forgotten.

Subject: [Non-DoD Source] Addendum to my last

I was reminded by our Treasurer Gary White (DLG 11) about the following,
that we approved at our recent reunion and business meeting in Newport RI.

We have $250 to donate to the crew's welfare and recreation fund in memory
of Wilfred A. "Bill" Sumner, Coxswain, USS MAHAN DD364, a founding member of
the association and a long time trustee on the association board. Bill
passed away at his home in Dallas, TX in August at the age of 92. He was
aboard the 364 when she was hit by three Japanese kamikazes on December 7,
1944 and sunk. Please let us know who the donation should be addressed to
and the mailing address.

Vice President
USS MAHAN Association
