1 July 2008

Well here we go again, time for the next edition of our association newsletter and my mind is a complete blank.  I hope that you will bear with me.

Many of you probably do not know that there is a Sea Cadet group which is officially designated as The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps Mahan Division.

James Keller is the head of the Mahan Division.

Here is his input.

While working as a lab instructor at the US Military Academies Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering's “Mahan Hall” at West Point, I became quite intrigued about the history of the Mahan family.  As a US Navy veteran I was quite familiar with Alfred Thayer Mahan but I did not realize he had a father who was a USMA graduate.

As our Sea Cadet unit was receiving training support from both the USS Mahan (DDG 72) and USMA's Mahan Hall, it seemed fitting that we formally change our name to the “Mahan Division” in honor of both Mahan's.

The following is a portion of the website for the Sea Scouts.

“The US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Mahan Division, located in Albany, NY is named in honor of two of the United States Military's most prominent officers, leaders and educators, a father and son who both made immeasurable contributions to the branch of the service they chose to dedicate their lives to.  Dennis Hart Mahan, an 1824 graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point, and his son, Alfred Thayer Mahan, an 1859 Graduate of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis.

The Sea Scout website is http://www.mahandivision.org

I'm sure that anyone will enjoy taking a look and finding out what these young people are up to.

Next is a message from our president, Jeff Sweet.

Greetings,

First, I want to tell you that my beloved Beverly lost her two and half year battle with breast cancer on April 2.  She always looked forward to our reunions and the great people she met.

Let me say, I am anticipating our getting together in Corpus Christi, TX this September.  I'm sure this will be a spectacular reunion and I'm looking forward to seeing all the Mahan family there.  All you 42 sailors who made the Charleston reunion are needed to keep up the 42 growth in attendance.

All the best,

Jeff

Mahan Assn. President

I was shocked, as most everyone I have talked to, about Beverly.  I know myself that I enjoyed every time we were together and I will miss her smiles and wit.

On a good note, Beverly Sweet is the only one that I know of who could not answer roll call.

Since our reunion in Charleston we have had an influx of new members.  If you see anyone you know, get in touch.  I'm sure that they would enjoy hearing from a few old salts.

It looks like my weak mind has become even weaker so I will close with a little bit of western humor.

There are 2 theories to arguing with a woman—neither works.

Never miss a good chance to just shut up.

If you are riding ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it is still there.

And last but not least remember, three square meals a day, a good horse and a fairly decent wife.  What more could a man ask for.

Everyone take care and remember to say a prayer for our men and women in harms way.

See you in Corpus.
